The thought of living through a kitchen or bath remodel is a bit unnerving. Learning to live without a kitchen isn't easy but we have some suggestions to help you get through it. We promise that when it’s all over, you won’t remember the times when it was difficult… you’ll be too busy enjoying your beautiful new space!

PART 2: How do I survive without my kitchen?

  • Set up a nearby room, usually a dining room, as a small, make-shift kitchen space.
  • Your General Contractor will usually move your current refrigerator into that space.
  • Small appliances like a toaster, microwave, coffee pot, slow cooker can all help make quick meals.
  • Paper plates, plastic bowls, plastic silverware, etc. can all help make cleanup easier since you won’t have access to a sink or dishwasher.
  • Start saving coupons for restaurants and take-out food.  Take-out for dinner will only be temporary and will help for the nights when you’re too tired to make a small meal at home.
  • Small rubbermaid bin for baggies, plastic wrap, trash bags, etc.
  • Lots of ready-to-eat or microwaveable snacks.
  • Stock up on pre-made meals you can keep in your fridge or freezer and easy heat-and-eat meals.

PART 3: What do I need to do before my remodel starts?

For a kitchen remodel, you’ll need to make sure you pack up everything from your cabinets.  This is a great time to sort through your items and possibly donate some items you no longer need or use.  You can get boxes from your local grocery store’s produce department.  Make sure to label what’s in each box just in case you need to find something during the remodeling process.  Make sure to find a place to be able to store all your items until you are able to move back into your new kitchen.

PART 4: What will the remodeling process be like?

  • Most General Contractor’s will put up some type of dust control plastic and seal off your kitchen area to keep dust from getting into all the different areas of your house. Understand that there will be some dust that may escape the barriers, but the goal is always to keep that to a minimum.
  • Try to keep a pair of shoes nearby to wear when walking around the construction area.
  • If you’re able to take a vacation to get away from the remodeling project, now is the time!  We can help keep you updated on the kitchen progress and send you photos of the progress and even FaceTime or Zoom if need be.

Now sit back and let us help walk you through the whole process… before you know it, you’ll be cooking and relaxing in your beautiful, new kitchen!
